2011 Gemballa Mistrale

In the process of rebuilding their tuning empire after the devastating loss of Gemballa founder, Uwe Gemballa, the company has arrived at the 2011 Top Marques Monaco with two new packages: the Tornado based on the new Cayenne and the 2011 Mistrale based on the Panamera sedan. Both models are defined by the most impressive design, cutting edge technology and the finest materials.

For the Mistrale, Gemballa is offering two stages of engine updates. In stage one, the twin-turbo V8 engine has been tuned to deliver 610 HP and a peak torque of 626 lbs-ft. Stage two takes power to a more incredible 700 HP and 737 HP. This significant output is achieved through the use of larger turbochargers, a modified intake system, high efficiency intercoolers, sports exhaust, free-flow catalytic converters and bespoke ECU remapping.

"We have significantly reduced weight, but without compromising strength, safety or comfort," explained Andreas Schwarz, CEO of GEMBALLA GmbH. "Rather than cutting into the steel panels and bonding on new parts, as is common in the aftermarket industry, we completely replace entire panels with bespoke carbon-fiber ones that use the original mounting points," he said. "These new panels, which include the bonnet, front wings, doors, front and rear bumper/valance, save a total of 70kg."

Toyota wants to stick with current suppliers, not planning to find new ones

Toyota Motor Corp. will continue to single-source to suppliers in Japan and isn’t interested in finding alternative sources for parts that are in short supply after the March 11 earthquake in Japan. In a global conference call with financial analysts, Toyota Executive Vice President Atsushi Niimi said that the company is working hard to restore output throughout the world. Niimi, who oversees Toyota's production control, production engineering and manufacturing, revealed that Toyota's reliance on single suppliers is more common at the lower levels of its supply chain.

Niimi also said that Toyota has been “multiple-sourcing among different Tier 1 suppliers", according to Autonews. Toyota said last week that the production of 150 critical parts was damaged. Vehicle production is expected to get back to normal levels throughout the globe only in November or December.

Niimi said that some of those 150 parts used content or subparts that were focused in Tier 3 through Tier 4. Niimi explained that it is at these levels that a “sole source is sometimes relied upon." Specifically, the critical parts included microcomputers and rubber-related items. These had a single supplier. Niimi clarified further that since these suppliers are “renowned” for having very high engineering capabilities, switching to other sources won’t be simple.[via - 4wheelsnews]

2012 Volkswagen Beetle

Perhaps the most important debate of the past month surrounding a German automobile that isn't an Audi, BMW, or Mercedes-Benz has finally been settled. The new Beetle is no longer New, just new. It is now simply the 2012 Volkswagen Beetle. With or without the capital N, the latest Beetle is a big deal, with a simultaneous worldwide reveal in Berlin, Shanghai, and New York, where we'll be seeing it up close and personal for the first time at the 2011 New York auto show.
So while the new Beetle is in fact new, it is still very much a Beetle. While the trademark round fenders are present and accounted for, the bubble roof that became a calling card of the New Beetle has been flattened out into a roofline more reminiscent of the original Beetle. The result is a new C-pillar that's more faithful to the original, and a more vertical rear hatch. Much like the distantly related Porsche Panamera, not to mention the original Beetle, this means more usable headroom for rear seat passengers, something the New Beetle was lacking.
There are other substantial aesthetic changes. The new nose is longer and flatter, again like the original, and drops down onto a lower fascia that incorporates just enough of the new Volkswagen corporate grille to be recognizable. The headlights are, for the first time, bi-xenon HIDs with crescents of LED running lights framing their outboard edges. New running boards hint at the original Beetle, while a wider rear hatch rectifies another New Beetle shortcoming. An integrated spoiler is standard with the top-shelf engine.
If the 2012 VW Beetle looks wider and lower, that's because it is. To make the car look more masculine and muscular, Volkswagen widened the new Beetle by 3.3 inches and lowered the overall height by half an inch. In another bonus for the rear seat passengers, the car has also been stretched 6 inches longer overall and the wheelbase is longer, though Volkswagen hasn't said by how much. Optional 19-inch wheels, dual exhaust, and a performance and handling package will further its sporty aspirations.

2012 Subaru Impreza

Subaru executives readily admit that their "anywhere, any time" all-wheel-drive rides aren't always the prettiest. Nevertheless, the little automaker from Tokyo, Japan, has been on a tear.
In 2010, it posted its best-ever sales figures in the United States, an increase of 22 percent over 2009 for a total of 263,820 vehicles. In the last three years, as the rest of the auto industry struggled with double-digit sales declines, Subaru was the only automaker that posted consecutive sales increases.
The key to this windfall? Subaru says that it's attractive pricing and ideal vehicle sizing. So it makes sense that the company opted to stay the course on price and size for the fourth-generation Impreza, but to focus on improving two other vital characteristics of its best-seller.
"With the 2012 Impreza, we're heavy up on style, and we're heavy up on fuel efficiency. That's where we go next," says Michael McHale, Subaru's head of corporate communications.
At the 2010 Los Angeles auto show, Subaru demonstrated its emphasis on style with the Impreza Concept. Like the Legacy Concept shown in 2009, the Impreza prototype demonstrated an athletic physique characterized by an aggressive nose and aerodynamic rear. Its profile was slim with a steeply raked windshield.
Many of the show car's design elements were translated into the striking 2012 Impreza. The hexagonal grille has wings flanking a prominent badge. The wide-set, hawkeye headlamps rotate and set off a strong shoulderline and creased hood, both cribbed from big brother Legacy.
The base of the A-pillar has been relocated 7.9 inches forward for a longer, more rakish greenhouse. With the goal of providing class-leading visibility, Subaru thinned the A-pillars and detached the side mirrors from their bases. Windowsills were kept low, with partitioned glass at all the side windows.
The look is much improved over the flaccid previous generation. The 2012 Impreza has a muscular, Baby Legacy thing going on, especially the five-door hatch when viewed from behind. Chunky taillamps and a chiseled rear fascia butch up the gentle fender flares.
